How to wash Silk Sheets

One of the most common questions we get here at THXSILK from our customers is how to wash their silk sheets and other silk bedding products more effectively. Silk bedding is relatively high-grade, and people treat it with great care. However, in actual use, some stains will inevitably remain on the surface of the silk bedding. Many people don’t know how to clean it effectively. The washing methods for ordinary bedding are not often ideal for silk, resulting in color changes after washing and drying. This is easy to avoid and requires some basic knowledge of the composition and properties of the silk bedding.

How to wash silk sheets properly and effectively?

Since silk is a protein fiber and contains a variety of amino acids, any alkaline detergent (especially washing powder, soap, etc.) will damage the color, texture, and texture of silk fabric, thus losing the healthcare function of the silk fabric and shortening its life. Therefore, neutral or weakly acidic detergents (such as silk detergent, shampoo, shower gel, etc.) should be used.

Remember: Do not wash silk bedding with an alkaline detergent.

Let's take a look at our recommended washing method. According to the ratio indicated in the detergent instructions, add an appropriate amount of detergent in clean water at room temperature and mix well. After soaking the silk bedding for 3 minutes, gently scrub it, lift it and gently shake it in the water. Rinse with water at room temperature for 2-3 times. The amount of water should be too much.

During the rinsing process, the silk should not be twisted. It should be dragged and swayed back and forth in the water.

When changing the water, gently press the silk fabric with both hands to squeeze out some water, do not wring the silk. Drip some detergent in the area of the stain you want to remove, and wash it on the reverse side by using a smashing and squeezing action. Again, do not twist, wring or froth the silk. This technique can resolve most cleaning situations.

After the rinsing is completed, it CANNOT be wrung out hard, and it CANNOT be dried by the washing machine. Just hang the sheet with the opposite side facing the air and let it dry naturally. During the drying process, the sheet should not be exposed to sunlight; otherwise, the silk fabric will be discolored, and the texture will be damaged.

More care tips to keep in mind when washing silk sheets:

  • Once the silk sheets get stained, please wash them as soon as possible, and wash them by hand.
  • Silk bedding CANNOT be washed in a washing machine.
  • Wash at normal water temperatures and with a professional detergent.
  • Different colors of silk home textiles should be washed separately to avoid staining each other.
  • DO NOT soak and rinse for too long. The general soaking time is about three minutes.
  • DO NOT rub, brush, twist, or wring during the washing process.

It may sound like a lot of things to remember, but basically, it is common sense. Silk is a natural fabric with wonderful natural and health properties. So when we wash it, we need to treat it as you would something 'natural'. This way, your silk bedding, and silk sheets will last you a lifetime.
